Ok. Well goto your nearest shop of electrical things. For a TINY amount of oney you can buy what are known as "Wrok lights" they are immensly bright. And you feel like you are gcooking when you use them to do self portraits but they are so versatile. You can then bounce the light off of white paper, or some tissue or card instead of an expensive reflector.

Thats another thing. You dont need umbrealls and stuff. If your only light is a window or something. Use some large white card on the other side of your subject to light them that side too. Use different coloured card for different effects.

Etc etc. :)

Haha! :) I have one. I remember doing some self portraits for osmoen who needed some "nature" portraits done for art so they could draw them. If you are unfamiliar with the term nature then, well.. its kinda funny. But yeah I felt like I was being cooked!

Aye, last time I did selfportraits I used both lights at the same time, and I swear I burnt myself!

couple things that have worked for me:

1. Tree lamps (the kind that consist of a pole with three positionable lightbulbs on it) can be a great start. Put some high-wattage outdoor floods in one, and you can point them all over the place, bounce them, whatever.
2. Soft box: get some semi-translucent plastic, the kind people use to cover their broken car windows when it rains or whatever, create a frame out of like PVC pipe, or even a poster frame, and point all 3 of the aforementioned light sources through it.
3. Chinese Lanterns can also provide a good diffuse light source.
