Journal.gifDSLR IR kicking my arse
So, I just bought an R72 for my Tamron 28-300. And quickly realized IR with an SLR is a lot trickier than with a point-and-shoot.

No matter what white balance preset I use I get a blaring (and useless) photo. Now back when I did IRs with the Fuji FinepixS200 I used to just set the white balance to incandescent and everything was cool. All I had to do was pass them through some photoshop and I was in IR heaven.

However, with the D50 I've been having to set custom white balances to get any effect, and so far I've found that doing it on something reddish will give me pretty decent results, but not a lot of color variety. So, anyone know what surface/color I should set my white balance with? Can anyone give me some tips with doing IR with a DSLR that does not involve converting it?

=EDIT=

Nevermind! Got everything figured out!

I've heard that a grassy-green colour works wonders with IR. ;)
:iconiamalittlelost:
I read that too, so I metered on a bunch of different hues of green, but I still get an all-red photo. :(

Sorry I can't help much, I did look up your camera and there doesn't seem to be a white balance fine-adjust [link] like on mine [link] I was wondering: are you sure its metering OK? it may be over exposing because the meter reads near black with IR filter on. The best I can say is use Raw Format and manual metering and play with the white balance in PS (in Adobe Lightroom you can vary the tone and White balance with a slider to a large extent from a raw file) My only other suggestion is to try setting the white balance on a stove element that is glowing red.

Hmm. There is a misunderstanding here. Metering in terms of exposure is not a problem, I set it all manually. What I meant by metering is setting the white balance, haha. Right now I set it up by making a large PS graphic and filling it in with bright red. And it seems to work fine [link] so all I have to do now is wait for some good weather and go shooting! Thanks for your help, its appreciated. :D

Oh oh, trade cameras with me? I'll include both my lenses. =P

for some reason I thought the glowing electric stove element would do better than a solid visible red ( a continuous black body spectrum with actual IR wavelengths) that was just a guess though. Glad to hear you're working it out.
Nope, like my camera just fine. :P I probably would like the Canon brand glass a little more but the sigma's are doing pretty well so far.
